SunBar helps you find bars, cafés and restaurants whose terraces are bathed in sunlight right now. This policy explains what little data the app needs to do that — and what it never does.

What SunBar Does

SunBar uses the position of the sun — calculated locally from the current time and your location — to tell you which outdoor terraces nearby are likely to be sunny at this moment. There are no accounts, no sign-ups, no behavioural tracking.

Your Location

If you grant permission, SunBar reads your device's GPS or network position to centre the map near you. Your coordinates are never sent to our servers. They stay in your browser and are used only to:

• Fetch the list of nearby venues from our API
• Calculate the sun's altitude and azimuth using the open-source SunCalc library

You can also search for any place manually or move the map freely without sharing your location.

Search Queries

When you type a place name in the search box, the query is sent to Nominatim — the geocoding service run by the OpenStreetMap Foundation — to find matching locations. Nominatim's own privacy policy applies to those requests.

The Interactive Map

The map is powered by Esri / ArcGIS. If you accept map cookies, your browser connects to Esri's CDN and tile servers (cdn.arcgis.com, basemaps.arcgis.com, services.arcgisonline.com). Esri may set cookies and collect technical usage data as described in Esri's Privacy Statement.

If you reject map cookies, the interactive map will not load, but all other features of SunBar work normally. You can change your choice at any time via the cookie banner.

Cookies

SunBar itself sets no analytics or tracking cookies. The only optional cookies are those placed by the ArcGIS / Esri map service, and only when you explicitly accept them. Your preference is saved in your browser's localStorage.

Community Contributions

When you submit a venue through the app, its name, type and coordinates become part of the public SunBar dataset. Please do not include personal information in venue submissions.

Children

SunBar is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

Changes

We may update this policy occasionally. Any changes will be posted here with a revised date.
